Jay served two tours overseas with the Army, in Iraq and Afghanistan. Jay worked with the Iraq Police doing toy and school supply drives for local schools and villages. He worked with the Afghanistan Army training them and working in the prisons. Throughout his tours, Jay found ways to donate his time, earning the Military Outstand Volunteer Achievement Award for volunteering over 100 hours making "fuel doughnuts" for Afghan villagers.
Back home, Jay chairs a chapter of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, an organization of Vets helping Vets, including events and fundraisers to help Veterans in need.
Jay and his wife, Alycia, have a young son and are committed to Durham long-term. Jay feels with the financial uncertainty facing the nation, and with the declining enrollment in the district, the District needs to be more fiscally responsible, and transparent, and looks forward to continuing to support those efforts when re-elected to the Board of Education.
